A Soirée at SPACE Atelier

Where Design Finds Its Light

Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur – On a golden evening in Bangsar, we found ourselves stepping into what once was a quiet residential villa, now transformed into something truly special. Welcome to Space Atelier, a serene new chapter under the SPACE Furniture family, Malaysia’s leading retailer of luxury designer furniture and the exclusive home to some of the world’s most iconic brands.

With dusk light pouring through generous windows and the soft hum of conversation filling the air, the evening felt casual yet refined. This wasn’t just another showroom opening—it was an invitation to experience something deeper: a connection to design, light, and quiet luxury.

The property, originally a standalone villa in the heart of Bangsar, has been carefully reimagined by the architecture studio MLA Design. The result is stunning yet restrained: soft natural light, an open mezzanine, a breezy courtyard that invites you to pause. There’s something almost residential about it—a subtle nod to how furniture should live, not just exist.

Inside, the curation is confident. Think B&B Italia’s sculptural sofas—pieces that have graced the halls of MoMA New York and luxury hotels like the Bulgari in Paris—alongside Poliform’s precise architectural shelving and the celestial forms of Bocci lighting. These aren’t just products. They are objects of emotion, history, and craftsmanship. Many of the brands carried by SPACE have partnered with the likes of Stella McCartney, Rolex, and Bentley, speaking volumes of their standing in both design and cultural spheres.

SPACE Furniture itself is no newcomer. With over 30 years of legacy, it remains one of Australia’s most respected contemporary design retailers. From Sydney and Melbourne to Brisbane, Singapore, and now Kuala Lumpur, its showrooms are known not just for housing iconic furniture, but for creating immersive environments that celebrate design thinking, storytelling, and lifestyle. Each location adapts to its local culture while retaining the brand’s DNA: intuitive spaces, personalised service, and a deep respect for good design.

The Kuala Lumpur atelier is no different. In fact, it feels like a quietly confident younger sibling—sophisticated without trying too hard, designed to welcome rather than impress. The space also serves as the launchpad for SPACE Atelier, the brand’s new bespoke service tailored for discerning homeowners, architects, and interior designers. It’s a service grounded in listening, collaborating, and guiding clients toward spaces that reflect not just trends, but personal stories.

The evening itself was hosted by Leighton Clarke, Group CEO of SPACE Furniture, alongside David Hartikainen, Head of Interiors and Business Development. Both were warm, engaging, and deeply passionate about the evolution of design in Southeast Asia. They spoke of the need for balance in interior experiences—a blend of international quality with local insight, form with feeling.

As we wandered through the showroom, glass in hand, we found ourselves not just admiring the pieces, but imagining them in our own homes. Which brings me to a little confession.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Bocci. And Kartell, too. I still remember being introduced to both during a stay at an Airbnb apartment in Berlin—one of those carefully styled, sun-drenched spaces where everything just worked. I didn’t even know the name of the lamp until I Googled it the next morning. From then on, I was hooked. Of course, the price point is… let’s say aspirational. But honestly, dreaming is half the fun. These are pieces you build toward—objects that deserve intention and time.

That’s exactly what SPACE Atelier does so well. It reminds us that our spaces deserve care. That investing in one chair, one light, or one table you love can transform the way you live. And that luxury isn’t about quantity—it’s about resonance.

Throughout the evening, the team gently guided guests through the design stories behind each piece. No pressure, no jargon. Just quiet insights, moments of admiration, and the occasional laugh shared over a favourite brand or material choice. The space invites curiosity, and more importantly, it rewards it.

Whether you’re working with an interior designer, refreshing a room, or simply love to be surrounded by beautiful things, SPACE Atelier offers more than a showroom—it offers a way of seeing.
