Art Jakarta 2026: Why Southeast Asia’s Contemporary Art Market Is Demanding Your Attention

Art fairs frequently fall into the trap of acting as quiet, exclusive markets for a select few. Art Jakarta 2026 breaks that pattern. Returning to JIExpo Kemayoran, this edition presents a clear statement on how art, capital, and regional culture converge.

At its core, Art Jakarta remains a primary commercial engine. The main Gallery section gathers 75 exhibitors from across Asia, introducing 19 first-time participants alongside established galleries. Established flagships—including ROH (Jakarta), Gajah Gallery (Singapore/Jakarta/Yogyakarta/Manila), Sullivan+Strumpf (Sydney/Singapore/Melbourne), Ota Fine Arts (Tokyo/Singapore/Shanghai), and Esther Schipper (Berlin/Paris/Seoul)—anchor the floor with strong curatorial lineups. Regional spaces such as kohesi Initiatives (Yogyakarta), Warin Lab Contemporary (Bangkok), and Vin Gallery (Ho Chi Minh City) offer direct perspectives from fast-growing Southeast Asian centers.

Corporate partnerships at the fair extend beyond standard sponsorship, as brands have commissioned large-scale installations that engage directly with complex themes.

1. Marking two decades in Asia, Lead Partner Julius Baer presents artist Handiwirman Saputra in the VIP Lounge, showcasing his 'Penampang Taut Berpilin' series alongside new paintings and the Kuasa Alam (The Might of Nature) interactive station.

2. In Lost at Sea, Yogyakarta-based artist Endry Pragusta builds a raft installation referencing Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa for Bibit to consider how educational structures respond to disruption.

3. Treasury Art Prize recipient Etza Meisyara translates digital gold into a multi-sensory environment with Gravity of the Unheld, using sound, sight, and scent to study value and trust.

4. myBCA District One hosts a gamified space featuring Poket Valas, Poket Rupiah, and The New Gacha Berhadiah designed for younger digital banking users.

5. Sound engineer and macramé artist Agnes Hansella repurposes cable waste from iForte to construct Hutan Kabel, a responsive structure modeled after Central Borneo's Ficus trees that reacts to visitor movement.

6. Utilizing laminate materials from TACO's New Horizon collection, Aji Fajar of Palette Studio presents The Curiosity Engine, converting mechanical fixtures into interactive objects.

7. SUPERMUSIC presents competition winners who translate music culture and performance energy into visual art.

8. MR.D.I.Y. Indonesia Art Competition displays works by seven winners addressing the theme "Strength & Resilience," alongside regional entries from Malaysia and Thailand.

Art Jakarta expands its programming through specialized sectors rather than relying solely on standard gallery displays. The SCENE platform features 39 presentations dedicated to independent collectives, design studios, and print initiatives, including DGTMB Shop, Kebun Seni, and Studio A.

Positioned within the main gallery layout, the SPOT section highlights site-specific projects by Angki Purbandono (Berbunga-bunga: Tribute to Red Cross Movement Papua), Henryette Louise (Mammalian Locomotion), and Nguyễn Phương Linh (Pulse 1, 2).

The AJX section houses institutional exchanges, including Korea Focus featuring 14 emerging Korean galleries organized with the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and KAMS, alongside ISI Bali’s Nata-Citta Art Space (N-CAS) under the theme KALA-JNANA-KAWYA.

Supported by Manajemen Talenta Nasional (MTN) Seni Budaya, the AJ SCOPE platform highlights market initiatives from non-capital cities, including Mini Art Malang, Artists Art Fair Pekanbaru, ART HEY Banyumas, Maa Ledungga Gorontalo, and Watercolor Art Fair Yogyakarta.

The fair also connects visual art with adjacent creative sectors through design, publishing, and architectural spatial experiences. Fragrance house ALCHEMIST partners with Mai Yokoyama on The Sphinx, Djournal Cafe collaborates with street artist Darbotz, MINI presents its Paul Smith edition, and AIA x Iwan Tirta debuts the SMERTI IWAN TIRTA Runway Collection 2027.

Print publisher EDISII presents editioned works from Indonesian artists including Ugo Untoro, Sunaryo, and Agus Suwage. The CASA VIP Lounge references the board game Ludo, assigning four architectural practices—K-Thengono Design Studio (Expression), rumanara (Dimension), Spatial Sonata (Illusion), and Studio Talk (Declaration)—to design distinct spatial quadrants, while The Solitaire Clinic hosts a private lounge with a tea ceremony.

Art Jakarta serves as an annual benchmark for Southeast Asia's visual culture and market movement. The fair takes place at JIExpo Kemayoran in Jakarta, Indonesia, with Mangkuluhur ARTOTEL Suites and ARTOTEL Thamrin serving as official partner hotels. On-site dining options include the Art Jakarta Food Market, Pop Up Resto by Union, Djournal Monster Cafe, and ALCHEMIST. Visitor registration, event schedules, and entry passes are managed through the official Art Jakarta website.
