Saboaria, Porto, Portugal – From Historic Factory to Thoughtful Stay

Nestled within the charming historic quarter of Porto, Saboaria is a five-star boutique hotel that pays homage to its rich past while embracing modern elegance. The name Saboaria—which refers to a soap factory in both Portuguese and is a loanword in Malay (sabun)—beautifully nods to its roots as the former Saboaria do Bolhão, or Bolhão Soap Factory. Today, that history lingers gently in the air, from the building’s original layout to the tactile design elements that echo its artisanal beginnings.
The hotel seamlessly merges two adjacent buildings, framing a tranquil garden that hosts a spa, heated pool, and a curated corner of locally made products. The entire space feels like a private retreat in the heart of the city—intimate, restorative, and quietly luxurious.
With only 28 generously sized apartments, Saboaria offers a rare combination of thoughtful design and home-like comfort. Each suite feels considered, calming, and crafted. The one I stayed in was awash with natural light, and styled in a soft, neutral palette of muted greys and warm wood tones—elements that created an immediate sense of ease and groundedness. It included a well-equipped kitchenette—an understated detail that added a personal touch of home—and a balcony that overlooked a small patio garden.
This garden is more than a view; it’s an experience. A large jacuzzi awaits, nestled in greenery, making it the perfect way to unwind after a long day wandering Porto’s cobbled streets. This was, without question, my favourite spot. While the space feels luxurious and spacious, it remains close to my own personal style—simple, warm, and quietly refined.
Breakfast at Saboaria was another highlight. The dining area, with its exposed brick and rustic charm, creates a grounding atmosphere that invites slow mornings. One such morning, I had the pleasure of chatting with Mr. Nuno Silva, the General Manager, over coffee and fresh pastries. His attentiveness and insights into the hotel’s history and future plans gave a deeper layer of appreciation. Saboaria is not just a place to stay—it’s a place being thoughtfully shaped.
Interestingly, as someone from Southeast Asia, the name Saboaria felt oddly familiar. That moment of realising sabun—our word for soap—shares a linguistic root brought a warm sense of connection. It’s these unexpected links, the kind that travel gifts you without warning, that make the experience feel truly memorable.
Whether you’re a solo traveller seeking stillness, a creative needing inspiration, or a family wanting space and style, Saboaria offers a stay that lingers well beyond check-out.
