Terrene: Tropical Home with a Village Heart

Words and Photography by Kerol Izwan

In the quiet coastal village of Ahangama, a short walk from the surf of Kabalana beach, sits Terrene. Originally built as a private residence, this tropical home has been thoughtfully redesigned with a modern layout that feels comfortable and welcoming the moment you step inside. Run by Layla and Jamal, who also operate a second property in nearby Weligama town, this space shows how a traditional house can be opened up to the fresh air while still feeling completely grounded.

The front gate welcomes you with an instant feeling of a bohemian chic home
During my stay, I sat down for a coffee with Layla. We clicked instantly, discovering that we share a lot of the same ideas about design and how to bring a space to life. It became clear during our chat that this project is a genuine labour of love for them, balanced by a real desire to give back to the community.
The house relies on high ceilings and natural light to stay cool. By keeping the roof high with exposed wooden beams, the main living area feels bright and breezy. The square footprint of the house is simple and practical, balancing the open shared spaces with two identical bedrooms separated by a central hallway. From the front door to the back window, daylight moves easily through the house, making the pathways bright and pleasant to walk through.

Surrounded by local houses, Terrene feels like a natural part of the village. The location is tucked away and quiet, giving you the feeling of staying in a tropical green space alongside local families, while still being just a short walk to the beach or the popular spots around Ahangama. After a few nights, a comforting familiarity sets in. Bumping into the same neighbours a few times reinforces the relaxed, friendly rhythm of the area. It is a nice feeling that makes you feel less like a tourist and more like you are staying in your own little home. Inside, the house keeps things simple with calm, humble colours. There is no loud or forced styling here, just a relaxing choice of sandy beiges, oak browns, and clean white walls.
1. The Shared Pavilion: A huge, open living zone that stretches straight into the kitchen, encouraging a slow, unhurried daily rhythm. While you sit on the living room sofa, you can easily chat with whoever is cooking—if you are not the cook yourself, obviously (hehe).

2. The Front Yard: A mature garden shaded by a thick canopy of trees that filters the intense Sri Lankan sun before it hits the house. There is a ready-made area here for a barbecue. Keep in mind that monkeys live in the trees here too, which is a nice reminder to share the space and appreciate the local wildlife.

3. The Bedrooms: Spaces put together with comfort in mind, featuring soft white linens and a warm, simple look that feels a bit like the sun-bleached houses in Portugal’s Algarve region. Small touches, like embroidered plush towels, show that Terrene pays attention to the finer details. Even though it is a home, it is very well curated.

While the main living spaces focus on clean lines, the bathrooms introduce a softer, more organic feel. Right beneath a transparent roof section that lets daylight flood the sink area, the bathroom gives you the feeling of showering outdoors while keeping total privacy.
The shower cubicle is a unique feature, built with smooth, curved walls that look like traditional Nubian masonry. These soft curves sit neatly against practical, square holes cut directly into the plaster walls for your soap and shampoo. The walls are finished in a soft blush-to-brown tone that feels very calming.

In the backyard, under the open sky, the colours shift to warmer tones. A deep terracotta jacuzzi sits next to a relaxed seating area with soft bean bags. The rich clay colour matches the outdoor shower at the front of the house, adding a nice touch of North African warmth to the property.

At the end of the day, Terrene works so well because it does not try to feel like a standard, cold hotel. By focusing on a practical layout, honest materials, and a genuine connection to the village, Layla and Jamal have built a space that respects its neighborhood. It leaves you with the comforting feeling that you did not just visit a place, but were warmly welcomed into the community.
