Threads of the Rainforest
Batik Boutique’s Rimba Collection and the art of wearing heritage today
As Merdeka passed and Malaysia Day approached, Batik Boutique unveiled a new chapter in its journey: the Rimba Collection. The launch unfolded not in a grand hall, but in the brand’s flagship store at 1 Mont Kiara—a space that naturally lent itself to intimacy. Friends, collaborators, and media gathered close, surrounded by fabrics, colours, and the quiet hum of conversation. It felt more like a gathering than an event, a reminder that heritage often lives most vividly in small, personal settings.

Rimba draws its life from the rainforest. The designs echo deep green canopies and the pulse of nature, yet translate into contemporary batik patterns that slip easily into daily wardrobes. Each piece is hand-dyed by artisans—bearing the weight of tradition, yet designed to move with the present. Alongside Rimba, the Palma Collection softened the scene with palm-inspired motifs and gentler tones. Seen together, the two lines showed batik’s duality: bold when it chooses, understated when it wishes.
The evening also introduced Embrace, Batik Boutique’s first cross-border collaboration with a Singaporean jewellery brand. The pieces blended artisanal batik sensibilities with sleek, modern accents—an understated nod to connection across cultures and borders.
Yet the story extends far beyond fabric and metal. As a certified social enterprise, Batik Boutique exists to provide sustainable livelihoods for marginalised artisans and seamstresses. To date, more than 200 makers have been trained, positively impacting over 1,500 lives. Every scarf, garment, or accessory becomes more than an object; it becomes a story of resilience.
Founder and CEO Amy Blair spoke gently at the launch:
“The Rimba Collection is inspired by the beauty of our rainforests and the resilience of our artisans. Launching it during Merdeka and ahead of Malaysia Day makes it all the more meaningful, as we celebrate heritage, craftsmanship, and community together.”
As the evening drew on, guests lingered between displays—touching fabrics, trying on pieces, and imagining how batik might live with them beyond that night. Palma carried an air of quiet elegance, Rimba invited conversation, and Embrace showed how heritage could be stretched and reinterpreted without being lost.
What remained was a sense that Batik Boutique’s work sits at the intersection of beauty and impact. Rimba, Palma, and Embrace are not just collections; they are living invitations—to wear heritage with ease, to view batik as evolving rather than fixed, and to support the communities who continue to shape Malaysia’s story.
